Learn to Fly

Some frequently asked questions. If you can't find information you're looking for, contact us to find out more.

How long does it take to get a PPL?

Flying every day, you'd likely be able to achieve a Private licence in 3 months. Most people schedule their flying around their life, which means it usually takes a year or so.

Being an Aero Club, students are not bound by specific dates and schedules etc. This means that a PPL can take as long or short a time as you would like.

What can I do with a PPL?

You can take passengers flying anywhere in New Zealand.  You're not able to fly 'for hire or reward' - you need a Commercial licence for that. This means you're not allowed to charge passengers, but they can contribute to the cost of hiring the aircraft.

Aero-Club vs Flight School?

Aero Clubs provide flexible flight training for an individual's life style. Licences can be completed just as fast, but students aren't bound to specific schedules etc. Students can choose when they fly and can pay as they go. Aero Clubs have an active social scene. There are regular 'fly away' trips, weekly get-togethers and local and national flying competitions.

How much does it cost to learn to fly?

Our aircraft are charged out at an hourly rate for flight training. You only pay for the time when the engine is running.

For instructional flights there is a different rate which includes an instructor fee. Landing fees are per flight and Briefing fee per lesson briefing.

Does my Pilot licence expire?

A Pilot licence is valid for the lifetime of the holder.

There are currency requirements including a flight review every two years to ensure that you are still operating the aircraft in a safe manner.

Can I fly if I wear glasses?

As long as your vision is fine while wearing glasses, there should be no problem. There may be a requirement imposed that you must carry a spare pair of glasses while flying.

Are there Exams?

There are six multi choice theory exams for the PPL.

We are able to supply study books which cover each exam's syllabus and most students self study with assistance from Instructors and other willing club members.

Are THere medical Requirements?

Yes. For a PPL you have to pass a Class 2 Aviation Medical examination every five years. If you are fit and healthy then you will likely not have any issue with this.

A slightly more restricted Pilot licence is available with a less strict medical (Truck drivers medical).

If you have any other medical conditions that you think may affect your ability to get a medical, ask us about it.
